On November 9th, 1945, in the heart of Seoul, a seed of martial virtue was planted. This seed, the Moo Duk Kwan, blossomed into a renowned martial arts institution. Moo Duk Kwan, meaning “School of Martial Virtue,” became a beacon for those seeking physical and spiritual growth. Its founder, Hwang Kee, envisioned a place where the principles of courage, virtue, and discipline intertwined.

Hwang Kee’s journey began with a chance encounter. He witnessed a man skillfully using Taekkyon, a traditional Korean martial art, to defend himself against a group of attackers. Inspired, Hwang Kee sought to learn this art. Unable to find a teacher, he embarked on a path of self-discovery. He combined elements of Taekkyon with Chinese martial arts he learned while traveling between Manchuria and Korea. This fusion gave birth to Hwa Soo Do, “the Way of the Flowering Hand”. Later, he renamed it Tang Soo Do, which eventually evolved into Soo Bahk Do. Moo Duk Kwan served as the cradle for these evolving martial arts styles.

The Moo Duk Kwan thrived under Hwang Kee’s leadership. He emphasized not just physical prowess, but also the importance of intellectual pursuit. “A martial artist should be a warrior and a scholar,” he proclaimed. He penned numerous books, including the “Hwa Soo Do Kyo Bon” in 1949, the first modern martial arts text published in Korea. This was followed by the “Tang Soo Do Kyo Bon” in 1958 and the self-defense manual “Tang Soo Do Bo Shin Beop” in 1960. These texts became cornerstones of Moo Duk Kwan teachings, codifying techniques and preserving the philosophy behind the art. Hwang Kee’s son, Hwang Hyun-chul, continued this legacy, translating many of his father’s works into English, ensuring the Moo Duk Kwan’s teachings reached a wider audience.

The Moo Duk Kwan faced challenges and divisions over the years. Despite these trials, it persevered, spreading its influence across the globe. Today, practitioners of various martial arts styles, including Tang Soo Do, Soo Bahk Do, and Taekwondo, trace their lineage back to the Moo Duk Kwan. The spirit of Moo Duk Kwan, with its emphasis on martial virtue and scholarly pursuit, continues to inspire generations of martial artists worldwide. As you stand before this institution, imagine the countless individuals who have walked through its doors. They have come seeking knowledge, strength, and the path to inner peace.
