The wind whispers secrets from the past. Here before us stands Haengjusanseong Fortress a testament to Korean resilience. Built possibly around the mid-7th century during the Three Kingdoms period this ancient fortress has witnessed centuries of history. Its strategic location on Deogyangsan Mountain offered protection. It became a pivotal site during the 1592-1598 Imjin War.
Imagine the year 1593. The Battle of Haengju raged here. Thirty thousand Japanese soldiers faced the valiant defense of Korean forces led by General Kwon Yul. Women played a crucial role. They carried stones in their aprons haengju in Korean bolstering the defenses. Their contribution cemented the term haengju apron in history.
Archaeological investigations in 1991 2000 2016 2017 and 2019 unearthed layers of history. The fortress was rebuilt multiple times throughout the Goryeo and Joseon periods. This shows its enduring importance throughout Korean history. Parts of the fortress were restored after the excavations.
Atop the mountain stands a monument to the Battle of Haengju. It was built in 1603. Nearby is Chungjangsa Temple. It houses a portrait of General Kwon Yul a tribute to the hero of Haengju. The temple holds annual rituals on March 14th commemorating the victory.
