Seoul National University was established on August 27 1946. It was formed through the merging of ten higher education institutions in Seoul. During Japanese rule Keijo Imperial University was established. After World War II it became Gyeongseong University. The name changed to reflect its national status. The attribute Imperial was replaced with National.
SNU’s initial campus was in Dongsung-dong Jongno District. In 1975 most colleges moved to the new Gwanak Campus. This relocation was initiated by President Park Chung Hee. He disliked student protests at the former site. Today the Jongno District campus is still used by the College of Medicine Dentistry and Nursing. It is now called Yeongeon Campus.
SNU comprises sixteen colleges one graduate school and twelve professional graduate schools. These cover a wide array of disciplines from humanities and social sciences to engineering medicine and arts. The university has a student body of nearly 17000 undergraduates and 11000 graduate students.
