What if faith could move mountains? Here at the Manmin Central Church, founded in Seoul in 1982 by Jaerock Lee, that question isn’t rhetorical. This church, whose name “Manmin” translates to “all creation, all nations, all people,” pulsates with a history as dramatic as its ambitions. Manmin Central Church has grown to become one of Korea’s largest churches, a testament to its dynamic leader and its message. Originally, Manmin Central Church started in Seoul. It quickly gained recognition. The church boasts a global presence, claiming over 120,000 members worldwide and thousands of branch churches both in Korea and internationally. Pastor Lee, a charismatic leader, led the church until his passing in 2023. His daughter, Pastor Lee Soo-jin, has taken up the mantle, continuing her father’s legacy. The church’s influence extends beyond its walls. It operates GCN, a TV broadcasting station, spreading its message across the airwaves. It publishes the Manmin News Paper and Manmin Magazine. Its “Nissi” orchestra performs at significant events, from national prayer meetings to international goodwill concerts. Manmin Central Church has been a part of Korea’s history. It participated in events surrounding the 50th anniversary of the division of Korea and the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Despite its growth and influence, Manmin Central Church has faced controversy. Its expulsion from the Christian Council of Korea in 1999, following a controversial statement by Pastor Lee, sparked protests and legal battles. Yet, Manmin Central Church remains, a towering presence in Seoul’s religious landscape. Its story is a complex tapestry of faith, growth, and controversy. It continues to be a significant force in Korean Christianity.
