In 1990, Hanyoung Foreign Language High School opened its doors. It offered a unique opportunity for students in Seoul and beyond. This specialized high school, nestled in southeast Seoul, focuses on intensive language education alongside a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. Hanyoung Foreign Language High School isn’t just about memorizing vocabulary. It’s about immersing students in different cultures. Students choose a major language. They can select from Mandarin Chinese, German, French, Japanese, Spanish, and English. They spend nearly a third of their class time honing their language skills. This includes small group conversations with native speakers. Hanyoung Foreign Language High School boasts over 30 student clubs. These clubs range from debate and Model UN to volunteer work, video production, and even a Samulnori team. The school day is long, running from 7:40 am to 10 pm. Students balance seven to nine hours of classes with three to five hours of study hall in the evenings. Despite the demanding schedule, Hanyoung Foreign Language High School is known for its vibrant student life. Two major festivals punctuate each semester: HYFIVE (Culture Festival) and Field Day. HYFIVE is a whirlwind of games, activities, and student-led plays, each department showcasing its chosen language and culture. Field Day brings out the competitive spirit, with students participating in sports and activities representing their departments. Hanyoung Foreign Language High School also has a dedicated Overseas Study Program (OSP). It prepares students for universities abroad with specialized courses like SAT and Advanced Placement classes. The school’s reputation for academic excellence is well-earned. In 2005, Hanyoung had the highest percentage of graduates accepted into prestigious Korean universities. This tradition continues, with a strong showing of graduates attending Seoul National University in recent years.
