Did you ever imagine a church could be at the center of such fascinating controversy? We stand before the World Mission Society Church of God, or WMSCOG, a place that sparks both devotion and debate. Established in 1964 by Ahn Sahng-hong, the WMSCOG has spread worldwide, claiming 3.7 million members as of 2024. Its headquarters and main church are near Seoul, the vibrant heart of South Korea. The WMSCOG’s beliefs distinguish it from mainstream Christianity. They venerate Ahn Sahng-hong not just as a teacher, but as the Second Coming of Christ. They also introduce the concept of “God the Mother,” embodied by Zahng Gil-jah. This doctrine has raised eyebrows within the Christian community and beyond. Adding to the intrigue, the WMSCOG adheres to certain practices that differ from mainstream norms. They celebrate the Passover, observe the Sabbath on Saturday starting at sunrise, and advocate for women wearing veils during worship. They also reject Christmas, citing its pagan origins. Interestingly, they believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit as one God, a concept called Modalism. The WMSCOG has faced its share of challenges. Ahn Sahng-hong’s 1988 doomsday prophecy, which ultimately did not come to pass, led to accusations and investigations. While these didn’t result in charges, they added to the ongoing controversy surrounding the church. Furthermore, rumors of human trafficking, though debunked by police investigations, have caused distress and even threats towards WMSCOG members. Their aggressive evangelism tactics, particularly on college campuses, have led to bans and criticism. Former members have leveled accusations of cult-like practices and undue influence, further adding to the complex narrative of this church. Yet, the WMSCOG has also been recognized for its volunteer work, receiving The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2016. This highlights the complex nature of the World Mission Society Church of God. A place of both controversy and community, it leaves a lasting impact on those who encounter its story.
