“Why ‘Our Lady of the Poor’?”. The story of Seoul Hagye-dong Catholic Church starts with a humble beginning. This church stands as a beacon of faith in Nowon-gu. It has a unique history tied to its community.

Seoul Hagye-dong Catholic Church wasn’t always its own entity. It branched out from Gongreung-dong Catholic Church on September 24, 1992. This marked the beginning of its journey as an independent parish. Father Albert Han Seong-ho became the first parish priest. He guided the church through its formative years.

Initially lacking a dedicated space, the community celebrated Mass in a humble setting. They gathered in a room above a pharmacy near Cheonmak. This showed their commitment to faith despite modest circumstances. The area around Hagye-dong had many apartments and detached houses. Many residents faced economic hardships. This led to the church being dedicated to Our Lady of the Poor. It became a symbol of hope and support for the less fortunate.

In 2000 a significant milestone was reached. The sacred grounds were consecrated. This provided a permanent home for the congregation. It allowed them to expand their activities and services.

The church has seen many priests leading its flock. Each priest has brought unique perspectives and dedication. They include Father Kim Taek-am Peter. Also Father Lee Seong-un Michael served here. Father Kwon Tae-hyung Lino and Father Kim Ja-mun Nereo. Father Kim Choong-seok Andrew and Father Jung Eui-deok. The current priest is Father Kwon Hyuk-joon.

Getting to Seoul Hagye-dong Catholic Church is relatively easy. You can take Seoul Subway Line 7. Get off at Hagye Station and go out Exit 3. Walk about 600 meters eastward toward Nowon Eulji University Hospital. You will easily find the church.

Seoul Hagye-dong Catholic Church embraces various groups. These groups include the Woolrim Laya. Also there are the church building committee and the Sacred Heart Prayer Group. These reflect the diverse interests within the parish community.
