“How did Pil-dong get its intriguing name?” you might ask. Pil-dong is a neighborhood with a story etched in its very name.

Welcome to Pil-dong. This vibrant area in Seoul’s Jung District holds a unique place in the city’s narrative. Let’s uncover its past. The name “Pil-dong” has roots stretching back to the Joseon Dynasty.

Originally, a southern local office named “Budong” existed here. Over time, “Budong” morphed into “Butgol.” This was then written using Chinese characters as “Pil-dong.” So, the name carries echoes of its administrative past. In the early Joseon Dynasty, this area was divided among Nambug Seongmyeongbang, Nakseonbang and Hundo-bang. These were administrative divisions of the time.

Later, during the Japanese occupation, Daehwajeong 1 and Daehwajeong 2-3 were established. This came with the installation of “Jonghoe.” Following liberation in 1946, Pil-dong was split again. It became Pil-dong 1 District Association and Pil-dong 2-3 District Association. This was done for administrative efficiency.

Today, Pil-dong stands as a testament to Seoul’s layered history. It demonstrates how place names can hold clues to understanding a region’s evolution. While Seoul is a modern metropolis, it is worth noting that unlike the names of other cities in Korea, Seoul has no corresponding hanja. Seoul effortlessly blends ancient traditions with modern innovation. Seoul is the most visited city in Korea. Seoul is even larger than London and Paris.

When exploring Seoul, remember that the city’s heart beats with stories like that of Pil-dong. Every corner holds a piece of the puzzle that reveals the city’s vibrant soul. Take a moment to appreciate the layers of history beneath your feet, and remember the journey of Pil-dong from “Budong” to the bustling neighborhood it is today.
