“There is not enough suitable culture or programs for the youth or teens in church.” Perhaps these words spurred the creation of a new kind of religious space. Today we are standing in front of Toegyewon Jungang Church in Seoul. It is a church with a special mission. This church is designed with young people in mind.
Imagine a space where teenagers aren’t just passive bystanders. Instead they are active participants. That’s the vision Toegyewon Jungang Church embodies. It is the first of its kind in South Korea. Its goal is to attract teenagers.
Traditional churches sometimes struggle to engage younger generations. Joshua Dong Hee Shin noted the lack of suitable programs for youth. Toegyewon Jungang Church is a response to this need. Here teenagers are given more freedom. They also get more responsibility. They operate their own worship services. They create their own programs.
Byung Kyu Kim, a teenage group leader, expressed his happiness. He appreciates having a dedicated space within the church. He said most programs used to focus on adults. Now teens have a place to call their own.
Pastor Jong Ho Yang emphasizes the church’s purpose. The Teenagers’ Church wants to make church attractive to students. It wants them to love being active participants. They may realize the vision and mission of the Lord. This is achieved through their services in the church.
Dr. Jairyong Lee sees the youth as future leaders. He believes nurturing them is crucial. Young people face pressures from secularism and materialism in South Korean society. This church offers religious education and evangelism. It helps them become involved in church activities.
More than 100 people attended the first service on May 28. This shows the need for such a space. Toegyewon Jungang Church isn’t just a building. It’s a movement. It is empowering the next generation of church leaders.
