Twenty-seven refugees. That’s how it began. Twenty-seven souls seeking refuge from Soviet-occupied Korea found solace within the walls of Youngnak Presbyterian Church. This very spot.

Youngnak Presbyterian Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith hope and resilience. Founded on December 2 1945 by Kyung-Chik Han a man who later won the prestigious 1992 Templeton Prize it started small. A simple building a tent perhaps. But it grew.

The congregation swelled as more and more refugees crossed the 38th parallel. They sought religious freedom and found it here. By May 1950 a new church building had been erected to accommodate the burgeoning membership of over 4000. Think of the stories whispered within those walls. The prayers offered the community built.

By 1992 under the leadership of Reverend Han Youngnak had become a global phenomenon. It boasted a membership of 60000 the largest Presbyterian congregation in the world at the time. That’s incredible. This wasn’t just a local church. It was a beacon. A symbol of faith that spread far and wide. Its influence extended beyond its physical walls nurturing 500 sister churches planted by its members.

In 1998 under Pastor Emeritus Han Youngnak opened its doors even wider. The International Worship in English ministry was established. It was founded by Bill Majors an American missionary to Korea. He later received the honor of being named an Honorary Citizen of Seoul in 2005 a testament to his dedication and the church’s impact.

Look around you. This place has witnessed decades of devotion. It has been a haven for countless individuals seeking spiritual guidance and community. The church’s story isn’t just about numbers. It’s about the countless lives touched by its faith and its unwavering commitment to its community. It’s about hope amidst hardship. It’s about faith enduring. Youngnak Presbyterian Church stands as a powerful symbol of faith’s ability to transcend boundaries. It is a reminder that even in the darkest of times the human spirit can find strength and solace in community and faith.
