A haven of faith stands before you. This is Chungdong First Methodist Church. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living testament to Korean history.

Chungdong First Methodist Church holds a special place in Seoul’s story. Founded in 1885 by American missionary Henry Appenzeller it’s Korea’s first Methodist church. It’s also one of the earliest Protestant churches in the entire country. Imagine the courage it took to establish a Christian presence in 19th-century Korea.

The church wasn’t always this grand structure. Initially it was a humble hanok a traditional Korean house. It was called Bethel Chapel a name that reflects its significance as a house of God. As the congregation grew so did the need for a larger building. The groundbreaking ceremony in 1895 was a momentous occasion. Notable Korean leaders Soh Kwang-pom and Yun Chi-ho attended. They witnessed the laying of the foundation for a new era of Christianity in Korea.

The current building completed in 1897 is the oldest surviving church in Korea. It’s unique. It’s the only one originally built during the 19th century. Its architecture a simplified American Gothic style speaks volumes. It reflects the blend of Korean and Western influences during this pivotal period.

But Chungdong First Methodist Church’s influence goes far beyond its beautiful architecture. It served as a hub for early Korean publications. This included the Tongnip sinmun Korea’s first private newspaper. The church even housed the Trilingual Press publisher. Its press was the first privately owned printing press in Korea. Think of the impact this had on spreading information and ideas during a time of significant societal change.

The church also played a vital role in the development of Korean Christianity. It performed the first Methodist baptism in Korea in 1887. In 1889 it established the first Christian women’s group. It even acquired the first pipe organ a truly remarkable achievement for the time. These were all firsts that helped shape the religious landscape of Korea.

Today Chungdong First Methodist Church continues its mission. It holds services in both Korean and English. It houses a Mangon Christian History Reference Room. This museum showcases important historical materials. A new history museum opened in 2023 celebrating its rich past and continuing legacy.

Step inside and feel the weight of history. Feel the quiet reverence of a place that has witnessed so much. This is Chungdong First Methodist Church a symbol of faith resilience and the enduring power of the human spirit. It’s a place where the past whispers to the present.
