Founded on October 11 1885 by American missionary Henry Appenzeller. Chungdong First Methodist Church boasts numerous firsts. It was Korea’s first Methodist church. One of the earliest Protestant churches. The congregation held the first Methodist baptism in 1887. They started the first Christian women’s group in 1889. Imagine the courage and innovation it took.
The original building a small hanok was replaced in 1897. This building is the oldest extant church in Korea. The only one originally built in the 19th century. A remarkable feat of preservation. The church served as a hub for early Korean publications. It housed the Trilingual Press publisher. This press printed the Tongnip sinmun Korea’s first private newspaper. It also printed The Korean Christian Advocate the first Christian newspaper.
The architecture is a simplified American Gothic style. Note the arched window frames. Bethel Chapel as it was known became a Historic Site of South Korea in 1977. Today Chungdong First Methodist Church still holds services. They offer services in both Korean and English. They also maintain a Mangon Christian History Reference Room. A new history museum opened in November 2023. A fitting tribute to this significant landmark.
