Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Here at Chungdong First Methodist Church you can. This isn’t just any church. It’s the mother church of Methodism in Korea a place steeped in faith resilience and groundbreaking achievements.

Chungdong First Methodist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of belief. Founded by American missionary Henry Appenzeller on October 11 1885 it’s one of Korea’s earliest Protestant churches. Imagine the courage it took to establish a Christian congregation in a predominantly non-Christian nation.

The original Bethel Chapel a modest hanok a traditional Korean house served as the church’s first home. As the congregation grew a larger building became necessary. The groundbreaking ceremony for the current structure took place in 1895 with influential Korean leaders present. The dedication service followed on December 26 1897. This makes Chungdong First Methodist Church the oldest surviving church in Korea the only one originally built in the 19th century.

Chungdong First Methodist Church boasts a remarkable list of firsts. It performed the first Methodist baptism in Korea in 1887. It established the nation’s first Christian women’s group in 1889. It even acquired Korea’s first privately-owned printing press. This press was instrumental in publishing Korea’s first private newspaper Tongnip sinmun and its first Christian newspaper The Korean Christian Advocate. Think of the impact these publications had on Korean society.

The architecture itself is a beautiful blend of history and innovation. Its simplified American Gothic style with arched window frames is both elegant and historically significant. Designated a Historic Site of South Korea in 1977 Chungdong First Methodist Church is a national treasure.

Today Chungdong First Methodist Church continues to thrive. It holds services in both Korean and English reflecting its diverse congregation. It also houses a Mangon Christian History Reference Room and a history museum opened in 2023. These resources preserve and share the incredible story of this remarkable church.

More than a place of worship Chungdong First Methodist Church is a living museum a symbol of faith a beacon of progress a cornerstone of Korean history. As you stand here today reflect on the legacy of this extraordinary building. Its walls whisper stories of perseverance innovation and the enduring power of the human spirit. Its legacy continues to inspire.
