Nestled in the heart of Itaewon, the Embassy of Ukraine in Seoul stands as a symbol of resilience. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of Ukraine and its relationship with South Korea. The 주한 우크라이나 대사관, as it’s known in Korean, has witnessed history unfold since its establishment in October 1997. Ukraine declared its independence in 1991. South Korea quickly recognized this new nation. Diplomatic ties between the two countries were formally established in 1992. Initially, the Embassy was situated in Seoul’s Seocho District. It later moved to Dongbinggo-dong. Finally, it found its current home in the vibrant Itaewon district in January 2015. This embassy represents Ukraine in all its diplomatic affairs with South Korea. It handles everything from trade and economic cooperation to cultural exchanges and legal matters. The Embassy even played a central role in commemorating the 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. It hosted cross-cultural events in 2012, sharing Ukrainian culture with the people of South Korea. Ambassador Dmytro Ponomarenko is the current representative of Ukraine. He continues the work of his predecessors, fostering strong ties between these two nations. While the embassy itself is a relatively modern establishment, its existence reflects decades of evolving relations. It acts as a bridge between cultures, facilitating understanding and cooperation.
