Did you know this building is the oldest extant church in Korea? Chungdong First Methodist Church stands before you a testament to faith perseverance and history. Founded on October 11 1885 by American missionary Henry Appenzeller it represents the first Methodist church in Korea. It was one of the earliest Protestant churches too. Its initial congregation met in a humble hanok a traditional Korean house they called Bethel Chapel. As the congregation grew a larger structure was needed. The groundbreaking ceremony for the current building took place on September 9 1895 with prominent Korean leaders in attendance. The dedication service for the new Bethel Chapel was on December 26 1897. This building is unique. It’s the only church originally constructed in the 19th century still standing in Korea.

The church played a pivotal role in Korea’s early media landscape. It served as headquarters for several publications including the Tongnip sinmun Korea’s first private newspaper and The Korean Christian Advocate the nation’s first Christian newspaper. The Chungdong First Methodist Church acquired Korea’s first privately owned printing press facilitating these important publications. The church itself is an architectural gem a simplified American Gothic style with arched window frames. In 1977 Bethel Chapel was designated Historic Site of South Korea No 277.

Imagine the countless prayers whispered within these walls. Picture the vibrant services conducted in both Korean and English. Today the church not only serves its congregation but also houses a Mangon Christian History Reference Room filled with historical materials. A history museum opened in November 2023 showcasing the church’s rich past. More than a place of worship Chungdong First Methodist Church is a living archive of Korea’s spiritual and social evolution. It’s a symbol of the enduring power of faith its contribution to Korean society is undeniable. Standing here you feel the weight of history the echoes of past struggles and triumphs. You’re standing at the heart of Korean Methodism a place where faith forged a nation.
