Chungdong First Methodist Church stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and the intertwining of cultures. Founded in 1885 by American missionary Henry Appenzeller, this church holds the distinction of being the first Methodist church in Korea. It’s also one of Korea’s earliest Protestant churches. Imagine Appenzeller arriving in Seoul, a land steeped in tradition, with a vision to share his faith. In 1887, he acquired a traditional Korean house, a hanok, and named it “Bethel Chapel.” This humble dwelling served as the church’s first home, a testament to the small beginnings of a movement that would shape Korea’s religious landscape. The congregation flourished, outgrowing the Bethel Chapel. In 1895, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of a new era.
