Hidden within Goyang’s embrace lies the Joseon Dynasty’s Changneung Tomb at the Seooreung Tomb complex. It’s a quiet place, holding the stories of King Yejong and Queen Ansun. Before you stands Changneung, a poignant reminder of a reign cut short. King Yejong, the 8th Joseon monarch, ascended the throne in 1468. His time as king was brief. Just 14 months later, his poor health led to his death at Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1469. Changneung’s construction began the following year, a final resting place for the young king. The tomb’s design reflects the Joseon dynasty’s architectural style. Beside King Yejong rests Queen Ansun. Their stories intertwine at Changneung, a testament to their shared history. Queen Ansun became King Yejong’s second wife after the death of his first wife. She lived to see the completion of Changneung but passed away in 1498. She joined her husband at the Seooreung complex in 1499, her tomb nestled on a nearby hill. The Changneung Tomb holds a quiet dignity. It’s a space for reflection, where visitors can connect with the past. Every year on April 16th, memorial rites are performed here. These ceremonies honor the legacies of King Yejong and Queen Ansun. They bring Changneung to life, echoing the history held within its walls.
