For generations Jeju Seongan Church has witnessed the island’s triumphs and tragedies. Its history intertwines with the very soul of Jeju. Born from the dedication of early Christian pioneers it represents a unique chapter in Korean Christianity.

In 1904 the Iho-ri Community a burgeoning group of believers emerged spontaneously. Led by the courageous Kim Jae-won a man whose life was transformed by faith this community thrived despite adversity. He had suffered a debilitating illness but was miraculously healed after encountering a missionary. His profound experience ignited his devotion. He dedicated his life to sharing the gospel. Kim Jae-won faced immense challenges his family initially opposed his faith. Yet his unwavering commitment won many hearts.

Seven years later in 1907 Cho Bong Ho established another thriving community in Geumseong-ri. Cho Bong Ho a fervent patriot combined his Christian faith with a deep-seated love for his homeland. He studied in Seoul at schools founded by missionaries absorbing both spiritual and nationalistic ideals. Later he returned to Jeju sharing his faith and actively participating in the independence movement against Japanese rule. The people of Jeju erected a tower in his honor a cross prominently atop signifying his faith a striking symbol on this island with a diverse population.

These burgeoning communities sought guidance. They requested a pastor from Seoul. In response the first Presbyterian pastor was dispatched a momentous event in Korean church history. Missionary Lee Ki-pung arrived establishing Jeju Seongan Church and laying the groundwork for the hundreds of churches present on Jeju Island today.

One cannot overlook the painful chapter in Jeju’s past. The Jeju April 3 Incident of 1948 saw unspeakable violence. One-sixth of the island’s population perished. This devastating event left an indelible mark on Jeju’s collective memory. Yet even amid suffering the church endured a beacon of hope.

In 2018 the Jeju Church united. They held a service a time of mourning repentance and healing. The camellia a flower symbolizing hope blossoms abundantly in Jeju. It’s a place where tears are wiped away and a future of peace and healing is embraced.
