Why did Jeju Sanseonggyo Church rise from a place of exile and pain? Jeju Sanseonggyo Church stands as a testament to resilience. It’s a symbol of hope born from a history marked by both suffering and spiritual awakening. Long before missionaries arrived, two faith communities blossomed in Jeju: Ihori and Geumseong-ri. These communities, driven by personal experiences of healing and faith, laid the groundwork for the church’s future. Kim Jae-won, a young man cured at Chejungwon (later Severance Hospital) in Seoul, returned to Jeju and shared his newfound faith. He faced family opposition, yet persevered, establishing the Ihori Faith Community in 1904. Cho Bong-ho, another key figure, founded the Kumsungri Community in 1907. He championed both Christianity and Korean independence, a spirit reflected in the cross atop the tower erected in his honor. These communities yearned for spiritual leadership. They requested a pastor from Seoul. In response, missionary Lee Ki-pung arrived, establishing Jeju Seongan Church and numerous others. Today, over 450 churches dot Jeju Island, a remarkable growth from these humble beginnings. Jeju Sanseonggyo Church embodies the unique story of Christianity on the island. It’s a story of indigenous faith taking root, nurtured by missionaries, and ultimately flourishing despite adversity. The church’s growth from two small communities to hundreds reflects the power of faith, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of hope in a land once marked by exile and pain.
