Deep within the heart of Seoul, a beacon of tranquility resides. This is Jogyesa Temple, the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Jogyesa isn’t just a temple; it’s a living chronicle of Korean history and spirituality. Originally built in 1910 as Gakhwangsa Temple, it served as a symbol of resilience during turbulent times. The monks who founded Jogyesa yearned for independence and the restoration of Korean self-esteem. Gakhwangsa became the principal temple of modern Korean Buddhism, the first propagation center championing the legitimacy of local Buddhism. Notably, it held the distinction of being the first temple situated within Seoul’s four main gates. Jogyesa Temple witnessed Korea’s struggle under Japanese rule. Its name was changed to Taegosa in 1938, a vestige of the colonial era. Finally, in 1954, it reclaimed its true identity as Jogyesa, signifying a break from the past. Today, Jogyesa stands as a sanctuary in the bustling city, offering respite and tranquility to locals and visitors alike. Its Main Hall, open 24 hours a day, welcomes all who seek solace within its sacred walls. The temple actively engages with the community, inviting everyone to participate in its events and ceremonies. Jogyesa Temple is more than just a place of worship. It’s a cultural and historical center for Korean Buddhism. The Jogye Order, deeply rooted in the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, boasts a rich 1700-year history. With around 3,000 temples nationwide, including the three Jewel Temples of Tongdosa, Haeinsa, and Songgwangsa, the Jogye Order embodies the essence of Korean Buddhist tradition. Within the Jogyesa complex, you’ll discover the Central Buddhist Museum and an auditorium, preserving and sharing the treasures of Korean Buddhist art and history. The temple also houses the administrative headquarters of the Jogye Order, a training center, a propagation center, and the Central Council, all working to promote the understanding and practice of Buddhism. Jogyesa Temple isn’t simply a building. It is a vital, vibrant heart of Korean Buddhism, beating with the rhythm of history, spirituality, and community.
