Did you know that the Presbyterian Church of Korea has a rich and complex history? Right here before us stands a testament to that legacy. This isn’t just any church. This is the Saemoonan Church. Its story is interwoven with the very fabric of Korea’s modernization and Christianization.

The Saemoonan Church wasn’t the first Presbyterian church in Korea. Some historians point to the Sorae Church established earlier. However Saemoonan holds a special place. It was founded by the American missionary Horace Grant Underwood in 1887. He arrived in Seoul in 1885. He and Horace Allen are considered by many Korean Presbyterians as the founders of their church.

Underwood arrived shortly after Horace Allen. Allen was the first US Presbyterian missionary to Korea. He used his medical skills to gain favor with the Korean court. This helped pave the way for missionary work. The early years weren’t easy. The Korean government initially banned Christianity. Missionaries faced opposition. They persevered. The Presbyterian mission expanded rapidly. They established churches schools and hospitals.

The church grew thanks to the combined efforts of missionaries and Korean Christians. A key aspect was the “Nevius Plan”. It emphasized self-support and leadership development among Korean Christians. It didn’t work as well in China but it profoundly impacted Korea.

By 1907 the need for Korean pastors was significant. Four Presbyterian missions established the first theological seminary in Korea in Pyongyang. That same year the Presbyterian Church of Korea organized its first presbytery. Korean leadership was emphasized.

The Japanese occupation brought new challenges. Koreans were pressured to worship at Shinto shrines. Many Presbyterians refused. Mission schools were closed. Missionaries were forced to leave. The Korean War caused further devastation. Churches in North Korea were destroyed.

Despite immense hardships the Presbyterian Church of Korea survived and flourished in South Korea. The Saemoonan Church stands as a symbol of resilience. It embodies the enduring spirit of faith and perseverance. It is a living monument. It’s a place where history breathes. It speaks to the deep connection between Korea’s past and present. It is a place of worship a place of history a place of hope.
