The Truth is My Light. That’s the motto of Seoul National University. A powerful statement isn’t it?

Seoul National University SNU isn’t just a university. It’s a living testament to Korea’s journey from a Joseon dynasty past to its modern global standing. Imagine the royal orders of King Gojong in 1895. He envisioned modern education. His vision led to institutions like Beopkwan Yangseongso a law academy and Hanseong Sabeomhakgyo a teacher training school. These early schools became the foundation stones of SNU.

The university as we know it emerged in 1946. Ten institutions merged. Gyeongseong University Gyeongseong College of Education and several others joined forces. This wasn’t a smooth process. Students and professors protested against the US military government’s involvement. The upheaval resulted in firings and student departures. Yet SNU persevered. It overcame challenges.

The initial campus was in Dongsung-dong Jongno District. But in 1975 a new campus opened in Gwanak District. President Park Chung Hee’s dislike for student protests played a role in this move. The Gwanak campus replaced the Gwanak golf club. Parts of the old campus still exist as the Yeongeon Campus. This houses the College of Medicine College of Dentistry and College of Nursing.

SNU’s history is interwoven with Korea’s own history. The Korean War significantly impacted the university. SNU was occupied by North Korea. The Seoul National University Hospital massacre occurred. The university temporarily moved to Busan merging with other institutions for survival. This era left a deep mark on the institution’s identity.

Today SNU boasts impressive facilities. Its library holds millions of volumes. The Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies preserves royal library archives. The university museum and museum of art showcase Korea’s cultural heritage. The Gwanaksa dormitory provides housing for thousands of students.

Seoul National University is a symbol of academic excellence. Its graduates are leaders in various fields. They hold positions in academia government and business. The university’s reputation is renowned internationally. SNU consistently ranks among the world’s top universities.

However SNU’s story is not without its controversies. Issues of diversity and discrimination against foreign professors have been raised. While SNU strives for global recognition its challenges remain a part of its continuing narrative.

As you stand before Seoul National University remember its journey. It’s a university that embodies resilience ambition and a pursuit of knowledge. It reflects Korea’s transformation. It continues to shape Korea’s future. The truth may be its light but its story is far richer and more complex than any simple motto can convey.
