From a humble beginning in a Seoul living room the Yoido Full Gospel Church rose to become a global phenomenon. Imagine its first service in 1958. Only five people attended Pastor David Yonggi Cho his mother-in-law and three children. They gathered in Choi Ja-Shil’s modest home seeking refuge from the rain. This small gathering was the seed of what would become the world’s largest church.
The Yoido Full Gospel Church’s early years were defined by rapid growth. Starting in a living room then a tent in Choi’s yard it quickly outgrew its spaces. In 1961 the church purchased a building in Seodaemun. However this too proved too small. By 1968 the congregation had swelled to 8000 people.
The decision to move to Yeouido an undeveloped island on the Han River was bold. At the time Yeouido lacked proper infrastructure. Many doubted the project. But Pastor Cho’s faith and the dedication of the church members saw the construction of an enormous auditorium completed in 1973. The inaugural service drew 18000 attendees. This marked a new chapter for the Yoido Full Gospel Church.
Under Pastor Cho’s leadership the church grew at an extraordinary pace. It employed hundreds of ministers and thousands of lay leaders. Pastor Cho’s teachings which included a prosperity gospel attracted a massive following. The Yoido Full Gospel Church expanded to include satellite churches and various social outreach programs. The church even built a television studio and launched a Christian newspaper. The church’s influence spread far beyond Seoul. It established international missions and hosted global conferences.
In the 1990s the Yoido Full Gospel Church achieved a milestone recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. It became the largest church in the world with 700000 members. Pastor Cho’s international stature grew. He met heads of state and received accolades for his philanthropic work. The church’s efforts extended to even North Korea where it attempted to construct a cardiac hospital. Unfortunately inter-Korean relations hindered the project’s completion.
Despite facing financial scandals and controversies in later years the Yoido Full Gospel Church remains a powerful force in South Korea. It continues to provide social support for families and the vulnerable. Its legacy as a megachurch that started in a small living room is a testament to its enduring spirit.
