In 1940 war forced the evacuation of most missionaries. The congregation dwindled but not its spirit. A classroom in a seminary became their sanctuary during World War II. Its resilient members continued to meet.
After the war the Seoul Union Church faced more challenges. The Korean War caused further disruptions. Missionaries evacuated Seoul again. Services were held in homes. The congregation’s resolve remained unshaken. The need for a dedicated space was realized. Eventually the TaiWha Center provided a temporary haven. This marked a period of growth and stability for the church.
In 1985 a significant milestone was reached. The Seoul Union Church secured a permanent home at the Seoul Foreigner’s Cemetery. The construction of the Memorial Chapel provided a place of worship and remembrance. This was intended as a lasting home. Sadly a travesty occurred. The property was seized in 2007. The church was forced to relocate again to the Yonsei University Seminary Chapel. This was only a temporary home.
