It’s the largest Pentecostal congregation in South Korea perhaps the world. Founded in 1958 by David Yonggi Cho and Choi Ja-shil it began humbly in a home. Imagine just a handful of people gathered for the first service. From those humble beginnings Yoido Full Gospel Church blossomed.

The church’s growth was phenomenal. It outgrew tents then a building in Seodaemun. Pastor Cho’s innovative cell group system played a crucial role. It empowered women as leaders a revolutionary act in 1960s Korea. This ingenious strategy fostered rapid expansion.

The move to Yeouido Island was bold. The island was mostly sand dunes. But Pastor Cho had a vision. He saw a place to build a truly massive church. The current building a testament to faith and ambition was completed in 1973. It can hold 12000 people. It was even built by the same company that constructed the infamous Sampoong Department Store. The construction of the church however was significantly less disastrous.

Yoido Full Gospel Church isn’t just a building. It’s a sprawling complex. It houses a television studio broadcasting services internationally. It also operates a vast network of ministries. These include welfare programs educational institutions and an overseas missions program sending missionaries worldwide. The church even created Hansei University in 1986.

The church has faced controversies. Its founder David Yonggi Cho faced embezzlement allegations. Despite setbacks the church continues to thrive. In 2024 it made history appointing its first female elders. This reflects the evolving role of women within the church.

Today you stand before a symbol of faith resilience and ambition. Yoido Full Gospel Church is more than a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the power of belief community and relentless growth. It shows how a small gathering in a home can evolve into a global megachurch.
