Eight lanes of bustling traffic. That’s what greets you here at the Hangang Bridge. It’s a vital artery, pulsing with the lifeblood of Seoul. The Hangang Bridge isn’t just a way across the Han River. It’s a symbol, a historical landmark connecting the districts of Yongsan and Dongjak, even reaching over Nodeulseom Island. Imagine, before this modern marvel, there was nothing but a pontoon bridge. The river flowed freely, untouched by permanent crossings until the railway bridge arrived in 1900. The Hangang Bridge has seen its share of history. It started humbly as a simple footbridge in 1917. Then, damaged by a flood in 1925, it was rebuilt with a second span and tram tracks in 1935. A tragic chapter unfolded during the Korean War. South Korean forces, in a desperate attempt to halt the enemy advance, bombed their own bridge. This act of destruction claimed the lives of hundreds, possibly as many as a thousand civilians caught unaware. The bridge, a symbol of connection, became a scene of devastating loss. It wasn’t until 1954 that the Hangang Bridge was fully restored, rising from the ashes of war. Years later, in 1982, it was expanded and given the name it bears today. Now, look closely at the southern span. See the second and fourth posts? These mark the 100-meter stretch of water the Korea Meteorological Administration uses to declare the Han River officially frozen. The Hangang Bridge. More than just steel and concrete. It is a testament to resilience, a stage for history, and a vital link in the vibrant tapestry of Seoul.
