Did whispers of rebellion ever reach the hallowed halls of Chungdong First Methodist Church? Here, in the heart of Seoul, stands Korea’s first Protestant church. Founded in 1885 by the American missionary Henry Appenzeller, Chungdong First Methodist Church has witnessed a dramatic sweep of history. Imagine the scene in 1887. Appenzeller, a young, determined man, purchases a modest hanok. He calls it “Bethel Chapel,” a humble beginning for what would become a cornerstone of Korean Protestantism. The first Methodist baptism in Korea took place within those walls just two years later. Can you hear the echoes of hymns mixing with the sounds of a rapidly changing city? As the congregation grew, so did the need for a grander space. In 1895, construction began on the church we see today. Soh Kwang-pom and Yun Chi-ho, prominent Korean leaders, attended the groundbreaking. The new Bethel Chapel, completed in 1897, became a beacon of faith. This wasn’t merely a place of worship. Chungdong First Methodist Church also housed Korea’s first private newspaper, the Tongnip Sinmun. Think of the clandestine meetings, the hushed discussions of independence, perhaps even within these very walls. The church also published Korea’s first Christian newspaper, The Korean Christian Advocate. The printing press hummed with activity, spreading news and ideas that challenged the existing order. The church’s simplified American Gothic architecture, with its distinctive arched window frames, stands in stark contrast to the traditional Korean buildings of the time. It symbolizes the arrival of new ideas and a new era. Over the years, Chungdong First Methodist Church continued to evolve, undergoing an expansion in 1926. The original cruciform design gave way to a rectangular structure. Yet, the church’s historical significance remains. Today, it continues to serve as a vibrant center of faith. Chungdong First Methodist Church isn’t just a building. It is a living testament to the enduring power of faith, a witness to Korea’s turbulent history, and a symbol of the enduring exchange between cultures.
