Established in 1894, the Yeongeon Church, also known as Saemoonan Church, stands as a testament to faith and resilience. It started humbly. American missionary Horace Grant Underwood, alongside his Korean associates, Mr. Kim Young-kyu and Mr. Seo Sang-lun, laid the foundation for this iconic church. Underwood, a pivotal figure, also founded the Underwood School and Severance Hospital, leaving an undeniable mark on Korea’s history. Saemoonan Church holds the distinction of being the first organized Presbyterian church in South Korea. This “Mother Church of Korean Protestantism” has witnessed pivotal moments in the nation’s history.

Initially, Saemoonan Church began in a modest thatched-roof house. As the congregation grew, so did the church. It transitioned from a small house to a more permanent structure in 1897, funded by donations. By 1900, the church, led by Reverend James Scarth Gale, underwent further expansions to accommodate the burgeoning congregation, which had grown to over 1,000 members. The church’s influence extended beyond its walls. It became a hub for educational activities, housing the Yeongeon Elementary School, a precursor to the esteemed Jeongsin Girls’ School.

Saemoonan Church’s story intertwined with Korea’s struggle for independence. During the Japanese occupation, the church building, a symbol of Korean identity and resistance, became a target. The church was forced to merge with other Presbyterian churches, losing its independence in 1914 under the Japanese colonial regime. Yet, even in these challenging times, the spirit of the church remained unbroken. Its leaders and members continued to serve their community and maintain their faith.

Today, Saemoonan Church continues to thrive with a congregation of over 2,000 members. It offers various educational programs and community outreach initiatives. It remains a symbol of hope and perseverance. Saemoonan Church stands as a living testament to the enduring power of faith and the rich tapestry of Korean history. It has played a crucial role in shaping modern Korean society. Its legacy continues to inspire.
