Stepping into the world of Shincheonji Church of Jesus in Seoul is like entering a paradox. Shincheonji, often labeled a cult, presents a controversial narrative. Shincheonji claims its founder, Lee Man-hee, is the “Promised Pastor,” holding the key to unlocking the Book of Revelation’s secrets. Shincheonji’s teachings assert Lee is the only one who can decipher its metaphors. Shincheonji believes its members are destined for salvation at the Last Judgement, while those outside face destruction. Shincheonji’s history is marked by rapid growth and accusations of deceptive recruitment tactics. The 2020 COVID-19 outbreak in South Korea intensified scrutiny on Shincheonji. A member, “Patient 31,” became linked to a surge in cases, fueling public outcry against Shincheonji. While the Supreme Court acquitted Lee of obstructing the government’s pandemic response, the incident cemented Shincheonji’s controversial image. Despite the controversies, Shincheonji continues to operate, claiming to have signed thousands of MOUs with churches globally. Shincheonji even states that churches have changed their signs to align with Shincheonji. This, however, is met with accusations of deception, with claims that Shincheonji misrepresents its true nature. Shincheonji’s volunteer group actively engages in community service, seemingly an attempt to improve public perception. Despite this, opposition and allegations of cult-like practices persist. Shincheonji’s narrative continues to unfold, a mix of claimed divine revelation and disputed practices, leaving its true nature open to interpretation.
