The weathered stone whispers stories. This is Soongsil University’s Korean Christian Museum. More than just a museum it’s a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Korea.

Founded in 1948 by Professor Kim Yang-sun the museum initially housed his lifelong collection. This collection detailed the growth of Christianity in Korea. It also showcased Korean archeological and arts treasures. Kim Yang-sun himself was a remarkable man. A Presbyterian reverend and archaeologist he even engaged in anti-Japanese activities. His dedication to preserving Korean heritage is undeniable.

Tragedy struck during the museum’s early years. Kim Yang-sun’s wife and daughter tragically perished at sea. This loss only strengthened his resolve. He established the museum near the site of a planned Japanese palace. The Japanese intended to erase Korean identity and Christianity there. Kim Yang-sun’s act was a powerful statement of defiance.

The Korean War forced the museum’s temporary closure in 1950. It reopened in 1953 after the armistice. A setback occurred in 1958. The museum was briefly closed to make way for the National Assembly Hall. Professor Kim Yang-sun moved his archives to his home.

In 1967 he generously donated a significant part of his collection to his alma mater Soongsil University. The university marked its 70th anniversary by opening the Korean Christian Museum in the Westminster Chapel.

The museum found a permanent home in 1976 in a separate building. It moved again in 2003 to a modern facility. The museum now stands as a vibrant tribute to Professor Kim Yang-sun’s vision. It showcases the rich history of Christianity in Korea. It also houses an impressive collection of artifacts. It stands as a symbol of faith resilience and the preservation of Korean heritage. Soongsil University’s Korean Christian Museum is more than just a collection. It’s a living legacy.
