Here stands Seongho Church. It is a small but powerful testament to love and remembrance. This church embodies the dream of Emmanuel Seongho Park. He was a young man who tragically lost his life in the Sewol ferry disaster.
The Sewol ferry sank. It took the lives of 304 people. Emmanuel Seongho Park was one of them. He dreamed of becoming a priest. His dream was cut short. His parents found a way to keep his dream alive.
They built a church in his name. It became a place of worship. It also became a memorial. It honors all the Sewol victims. Jang Young-sung helped make it happen. He is president of the Sewol victims’ families association. He wanted to ensure no one forgot. He and his team initially planned to build 304 small houses. Each house would bear the name of a victim. These houses were intended for the needy. The first building became Seongho Church.
Building Seongho Church was a challenge. Materials, labor, and land were expensive. Jang Young-sung turned to Facebook. He shared the project. A wave of support followed. Carpenters, volunteers, and electricians offered help. They provided free labor to build the church.
Seongho Church is small. It is only 14 square meters. The inside is beautiful. There is a cross and a statue of Our Lady. A small stained-glass window adds color.
Father Im Jinkyo blessed the church. He is the local parish priest. About 30 other priests and religious joined him. Father Im spoke during the ceremony. He said the church is a place of worship. It is a place to remember Seongho’s dream. He urged people to show solidarity. He asked that they support the families who lost loved ones. This echoes the Pope’s teachings.
Seongho Church stands as a symbol. It reminds us of the Sewol tragedy. It represents Emmanuel Seongho Park’s unrealized dream. It showcases the power of community. It demonstrates the importance of remembrance. It also shines as a beacon of hope and solidarity. This small church carries a profound message. It serves as a lasting tribute.
