Did the name Horace Grant Underwood ever cross your path? Here at Saemoonan Church, his legacy resonates deeply. Saemoonan Church stands as a testament to his vision. Established in 1887, Saemoonan Church is recognized as the first organized Presbyterian church in South Korea. Underwood, an American missionary, not only founded this church but also played a key role in establishing other prominent institutions. These include Underwood School, Yonhi College (now Yonsei University), and Severance Hospital. Saemoonan Church is often called the “Mother Church of Korean Protestantism”. This signifies its importance in the development of Christianity in Korea. Prominent figures like Kim Kyu-sik, Ahn Chang-ho, and Choi Hyeon-bae have been associated with this church, adding to its historical significance. The church has seen several chapels throughout its history. The sixth and current chapel, completed in 2019, is an architectural marvel. Designed by Lee Eunseok, its unique design resembles a mother’s open arms. It has also garnered international acclaim, even gracing the cover of Phaidon’s “The World’s Best Architecture” in 2021. Interestingly, the final design deviated significantly from the architect’s original vision. Yet, it was the retained exterior facade that brought the building its recognition. This created a fascinating paradox in the architectural community. Saemoonan Church’s journey hasn’t been without its controversies. The appointment of Rev. Lee Sang-hak as senior pastor in 2017 sparked internal conflict due to the confidential nature of the selection process. Furthermore, Rev. Lee’s doctoral dissertation on “Sin and Salvation Based on the Han Experience of Koreans” stirred theological debate. His unconventional views challenged traditional interpretations, leading to discussions within the church. Saemoonan Church embodies a rich history, architectural innovation, and theological discourse. It continues to serve as a vital spiritual and historical landmark in Seoul.
