Whispers of ancient prayers still linger. This is Bongeunsa Temple. Founded in 794 during the Silla Kingdom it boasts over 1200 years of history. Originally named Gyeonseongsa it was later rebuilt and renamed Bongeunsa in 1498 under the patronage of Queen Jeonghyeon. The name Bongeunsa itself honors the king a prayer for King Seongjong’s eternal life.
Imagine the temple’s role during the Joseon Dynasty. Buddhism faced severe suppression yet Bongeunsa persevered. It even became the main temple of the Korean Seon sect for a time thanks to Queen Munjeong’s support. Monk Bou’s appointment as head in 1548 was short-lived though anti-Buddhist factions regained control soon after. For a period it even served as a center for Buddhist national exams.
The temple’s resilience is remarkable. A fire in 1939 and damage during the Korean War couldn’t erase its history. The Panjeon hall miraculously survived the war. Inside are priceless woodblock carvings of the Flower Garland Sutra created in 1855. These intricate carvings stand as a testament to Bongeunsa’s endurance.
Today Bongeunsa thrives. It’s a major tourist destination. Temple stays allow visitors to experience monastic life firsthand. Participate in baru ngongyang a traditional Buddhist meal.
