Founded in 1885 Seoul Union Church stands before you. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community. This wasn’t always a church building. In its early years it moved frequently. Services were held in various locations. This included homes guesthouses and even a Buddhist temple’s bell was used.
Imagine the challenges. Missionaries faced hostility. They conducted services under threat of death. The church’s first service was held in June 1885. It was a small gathering. Dr Horace Allen documented this momentous occasion in his diary.
Seoul Union Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It served as a beacon of hope. It provided comfort and community for foreigners in Korea. Through wars and hardship the church endured. It moved again and again. Finding new temporary spaces when necessary. This resilience speaks volumes.
After World War II the church reorganized. It elected a pastor. Dr William E Scott was chosen. He agreed on condition that he or an associate would lead services. This brought consistency. The congregation strengthened. This brought a sense of unity.
The Korean War further tested the church’s resolve. Missionaries evacuated Seoul twice. Services were held in private homes. Even when the city was a ghost town. The church’s commitment to faith never wavered.
For over 22 years Seoul Union Church found a home. This was the Memorial Chapel. The chapel was located in the Seoul Foreigner’s Cemetery. It was a permanent home. It represented years of progress and stability. But sadly it was seized in 2007.
The church found refuge. It moved to Yonsei University’s Seminary Chapel. This served as its home for years. Through these moves the church remained a vital part of the community. It continued its mission to serve. It brought comfort and faith to those who needed it.
