What if I told you that right here, in the heart of Seoul, stands a testament to unwavering faith? Seoul Union Church, the oldest Protestant church in Korea, has a story as captivating as the city itself. It began humbly in June 1885. A small group of believers gathered, defying warnings of “death to foreign devil worship”. Their quiet act of faith ignited a flame that has burned brightly for over a century. Seoul Union Church wasn’t always in a grand building. Its early years were marked by frequent moves. Services were held in the US Legation, Pai Chai Hall, and even the Methodist Mission’s school chapel, where a repurposed Buddhist temple bell called worshippers to prayer. The church’s first permanent home was the Memorial Chapel at Yangwhajin. This chapel, located within the Seoul Foreigner’s Cemetery, was granted to Seoul Union Church in 1985. However, in a tragic turn of events, the property was seized just 22 years later. The church community, resilient as ever, found refuge at Seoul Foreign School, and later, at Yonsei University’s Seminary Chapel. Seoul Union Church’s history is deeply intertwined with the tumultuous history of Korea. During World War II, as war clouds gathered, many missionaries were forced to evacuate. The remaining members continued to meet until the outbreak of the war, when they were relocated to the Methodist Seminary. After the war, Seoul Union Church was reborn. It provided a much-needed spiritual anchor for returning missionaries. The church’s commitment to its community extended beyond Sunday services. It assumed responsibility for the Seoul Foreign Cemetery, a poignant reminder of the lives lived and lost on Korean soil. Seoul Union Church has always been a beacon of unity. It has embraced people of all denominations, offering a welcoming space for worship in English. Despite facing numerous challenges, from displacement to financial struggles, Seoul Union Church has persevered. It stands as a symbol of enduring faith, a testament to the power of community, and a living piece of Seoul’s vibrant history.
