How about stepping back in time to a house where pivotal decisions shaped South Korea’s history? This is Park Chung-hee’s House in Sindang-dong. It stands as a testament to a complex past. The house offers a glimpse into the life of a man who profoundly influenced the nation.

Park Chung-hee’s House in Sindang-dong is more than just a building. It is a historic landmark. Park Chung-hee lived here from May 1958 to August 1961. This period saw him rise from brigadier to major general. More importantly, he plotted the May 16, 1961 military coup in this very house.

Park himself considered this house a lucky place. His son Park Ji-man was born shortly after the family moved in. The house witnessed significant events in Park’s early career.

Later, Park’s family returned to this residence. This was after his assassination in 1979. His daughter, Park Geun-hye, lived here for a year. She later became president of South Korea.

The house itself is a blend of architectural styles. It reflects both Japanese and Western influences. These “culture houses” were built during the Japanese colonial occupation. They housed Japanese residents of Seoul. Today, Park Chung-hee’s House in Sindang-dong is the only one of these houses still standing.

Designated as National Registered Cultural Heritage site number 412 in 2008, the house has been preserved carefully. The Seoul Metropolitan Government invested 490 million won in its restoration. It ensures the house remains a valuable cultural site.

The house is relatively small. It occupies a 341 square meter plot with a floor area of 128 square meters. Due to its size, tours are limited to 60 people. Reservations are required to explore this intimate historical space.

Inside, you’ll find replicas of the original furniture. Kim Su-jeong describes how they recreated chairs used by Yuk Young-soo. Yuk Young-soo was Park’s wife. She used these chairs to entertain guests.

In 2015, the museum welcomed around 200 visitors each day. Many were older South Korean conservatives. The building is owned by a foundation that honors Yuk Young-soo.

Park Chung-hee’s House in Sindang-dong offers a unique window into the past. It connects visitors to the personal and political life of a transformative figure. It allows visitors to reflect on the leader’s impact on South Korea. This house remains a place of historical significance. It is a reminder of the complex legacy of Park Chung-hee.
