The building spreads across a long stretch of land. The main entrance is in the center. It efficiently manages the flow of people. A cozy garden sits on the back side of the building.
A tall, slender tower is on one side of the long, low mass. The form’s contrast is visually appealing. The cross tower balances the chapel’s high volume. It serves as a counterbalance. This balances the overall shape.
The overall form is simple. It combines three or four basic volumes. Several layers create depth. These layers serve as useful external spaces. Canopies and entrances are examples. They also offer visual pleasure.
Inside, all spaces are along one corridor. A long corridor secures the flow of movement. Corridors are more than passageways. They serve as entrance halls. They also function as front halls before the chapel. Gardens are on the left and right sides of the corridor. Large windows are opened. The corridor is not narrow. It offers a plentiful access space. It leads to the chapel. It allows people to feel nature.
External materials are simple. White STUCCO and red bricks are used. The initial plan included exposed concrete. White STUCCO was chosen to reduce costs. The combination of white and red is refreshing. Red brick is used inside. This maintains context. It promotes economic feasibility. Dongsan Church stands as a testament to thoughtful design.
