“Twinkling bodies reaching for the sky striving to live upright.” This is the school motto of Seoul Gangnam Elementary School. Seoul Gangnam Elementary School first opened its doors in 1945. However its history traces back to 1905.

Seoul Gangnam Elementary School stands in Dongjak-gu. But don’t let the name fool you. It is not located in Gangnam-gu.

The school’s history is quite interesting. It began as Gangnam Primary School in August 1905. Then it was established by Gangnam Public School in 1935. In April 1941 it was renamed Gangnam Simsang Elementary School. After liberation in 1945 principal Kang Young-tae took office. Later in November of the same year the school was officially opened as Seoul Gangnam Elementary School.

In 2000 the school officially changed its name to Seoul Gangnam Elementary School. But even before that the name “Gangnam” was in use. A map from 1943 refers to ‘Gangnam Public National School’. This shows the name’s early roots in the area.

Seoul Gangnam Elementary School has a proud history of achievements. The school has received several awards over the years. In 2003 it was recognized for excellence in after-school programs. The school also won awards for its baseball team. It has also been honored for environmental education.

The school continues to thrive. As of 2024 Seoul Gangnam Elementary School has 704 students. There is also a dedicated staff of 45 teachers and administrators.

The school’s symbols reflect its values. The school flower is the Gaenari. It represents unlimited potential and hope. The school tree is the pine. It represents the spirit of the students.

Seoul Gangnam Elementary School is more than just a school. It is a place where students grow. It is a place where students learn and strive to live upright.
