Deep within the serene landscape of Goyang, just beyond Seoul’s vibrant embrace, lies the Seooreung Royal Tombs. These tombs, five in number, hold the remains of Joseon Dynasty royalty. Seooreung is much more than just a burial ground. It is a sprawling 1,600,000 square meter park, a peaceful oasis perfect for wandering and reflection. The tombs themselves are UNESCO World Heritage sites, recognized for their unique architecture and the stories they whisper of a bygone era. Seooreung offers more than just five royal tombs. You’ll also find Sunchangwon, the tomb of Crown Prince Sunhoe, and Daebinmyo, the final resting place of Royal Concubine Jang Hui-bin, whose life was filled with royal intrigue and ultimately, tragedy. Each tomb at Seooreung holds a unique tale. Sugyeongwon, for example, is the tomb of Lady Yi, a concubine of King Yeongjo. Her tomb was originally located in Seoul but was moved to Seooreung in 1968. The tomb of Ingneung belongs to Queen Ingyeong, King Sukjong’s first queen. She became a crown princess at the age of 10, a queen at 13, and tragically died at only 19. Sunchangwon houses Crown Prince Sunhoe and his wife, Lady Yun. Their tomb is smaller than the kings’ and queens’, reflecting their status, yet their royal lineage ensured a more elaborate burial than commoners. Gyeongneung is the resting place of Crown Prince Deokjong, the eldest son of King Taejo, and his wife Queen Sohye. Deokjong’s tomb was the first to be built at Seooreung, marking its significance in the history of the royal tombs. Daebinmyo tells a tale of royal betrayal. Jang Hui-bin, initially a concubine, rose to become queen. However, King Sukjong later poisoned her. Her tomb was moved to Seooreung from Gwangju in 1969. Lastly, Hongneung holds Queen Jeongseong, King Yeongjo’s first wife, who reigned for 34 years. She passed away childless, and King Yeongjo, despite reserving a spot beside her, was ultimately buried elsewhere due to political circumstances. While the tombs may appear similar, each whispers a distinct story of love, loss, ambition, and intrigue. Seooreung invites you to explore its serene paths, contemplate its history, and enjoy a picnic amidst its natural beauty. Allow ample time to soak in the atmosphere. Wear comfortable shoes, as the paths, though not strenuous, cover a fair distance. The spirit of Joseon royalty awaits you at Seooreung, where history comes alive amidst the tranquility of nature.
