Whispers of faith echo through time. This is Saemoonan Church. Right before you stands the first organized Presbyterian church in South Korea. Founded on September 27 1887 by Reverend H G Underwood it’s a testament to the enduring power of belief.

Saemoonan Church wasn’t always here. Its humble beginnings were in a Chungdong home. Fourteen baptized Koreans joined Reverend Underwood for that first service. One was baptized that very night. Two were appointed elders. Imagine the quiet strength in that small gathering.

As the congregation grew they moved to a Korean-style house. It stood in front of Underwood’s own residence. The church blossomed. Its influence spread throughout Seoul and beyond. They established branch churches reaching out to the Kyeonggi area. Saemoonan truly became the mother church.

Song Sunmyeong a Saemoonan member played a vital role in its growth. He served as an elder actively working to invigorate the church in 1904. Later Reverend Seo Kyeongjo one of Korea’s first seven reverends strengthened its internal structure.

In 1920 Reverend Cha Jaemyeong became the second reverend and the first Head Pastor. A pioneering role in Korea. He modernized the church organizing the monthly committee meetings and the choir. The church continued to adapt evolving with the times.

Tragedy struck during the Korean War. Reverend Kim Yeongju the third reverend was abducted to North Korea. Despite challenges Saemoonan Church persevered. Under Reverend Kang Sinmyeong’s leadership starting in 1955 the church flourished. The H G Underwood Memorial Hall was built in 1967. They began many programs reaching into rural communities. They offered medical missions and evening educational programs.

The current building a symbol of its growth was completed in 1972. The church celebrated its 85th anniversary in 1973. Further expansion followed. Overseas mission activities expanded. The Vladivostok Seminary was established in 1996. The Korean-Thai Mission Center was consecrated in 1998. More educational initiatives followed. The Saemoonan Teachers’ Institute the Saemoonan Volunteer Training Center and Saemoonan Academy all opened.

Saemoonan Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and community. It stands as a beacon a symbol of Korean Christianity’s enduring legacy. A powerful story in the heart of Seoul.
