Gazing upon this unique structure, one might wonder about the stories it holds. This is the Saemoonan Church. It’s a significant landmark in Seoul and the oldest Presbyterian church in South Korea. Saemoonan Church represents a fascinating blend of history, religion, and architecture.
The church’s story began in 1887. American missionary Horace Grant Underwood founded it. He also played a crucial role in establishing other institutions like Yonsei University and Severance Hospital. Saemoonan Church is known as the “Mother Church of Korean Protestantism”. Its impact extends far beyond its congregation. Prominent figures like Kim Kyu-sik, Ahn Chang-ho, and Choi Hyeon-bae have been associated with Saemoonan Church.
Over the years, the church has seen six different chapels. The current chapel, completed in 2019, is an architectural marvel. It was designed by Lee Eunseok, a renowned expert in religious architecture. The design is meant to resemble a mother’s arms reaching towards the sky. The chapel’s striking exterior has earned international acclaim. It even landed a spot on the cover of Phaidon’s “The World’s Best Architecture”.
The journey to the current chapel wasn’t without its challenges. The church significantly altered Lee Eunseok’s initial design. Ironically, the preserved facade is what brought the building its fame. There’s ongoing debate within the architectural community. Some believe the building would have been even more remarkable if the original design had been fully realized. Others are grateful that at least a part of the original vision was retained.
Saemoonan Church also faced controversy during its pastor appointment process. Reverend Lee Sang-hak’s acceptance of the position without prior notice to his congregation at Pohang Cheil Church caused internal conflict. Later, his doctoral dissertation, which challenged traditional views on sin and salvation, caused further debate.
Saemoonan Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the evolution of religious architecture. From its humble beginnings to its current architectural marvel, it has been a beacon of hope and controversy. It’s a place where history and modernity intertwine. The Saemoonan Church continues to inspire and provoke thought. Its distinctive structure and rich history make it a must-see. It leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.
