A proud, bronze figure dominates Gwanghwamun Square. This is the imposing statue of King Sejong the Great. King Sejong, the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty, is a revered figure in Korean history. He is best known for his creation of Hangul, the Korean alphabet. The statue, unveiled in 2009, stands over six meters tall. It depicts King Sejong seated, one hand raised, the other holding an open book. Around the base of the statue, you’ll find the characters of the Hangul alphabet carved into the stone. Look closer and you will see small models of a celestial globe, a rain gauge, and a sundial. These represent other inventions attributed to King Sejong’s era.
