Tucked away in the northern slopes of Bugaksan Mountain, lies Sukjeongmun. This historic gate, also known as the North Gate, is one of Seoul’s hidden treasures. Sukjeongmun played a unique role in Seoul’s history during the Joseon Dynasty. Unlike the bustling activity of the other city gates, Sukjeongmun was reserved for ceremonial purposes. Its close proximity to Gyeongbokgung Palace meant it was rarely used for everyday traffic. Imagine a royal procession, resplendent in vibrant silks, passing through Sukjeongmun for a sacred ritual. The air thick with incense and the rhythmic beat of traditional drums echoing against the ancient stones. Sukjeongmun was built in 1396, originally bearing the name Sukcheongmun. Later, in the early 16th century, its name was slightly modified to Sukjeongmun, meaning “Rule Solemnly Gate”. The original wooden gatehouse, sadly, fell victim to fire. What we see today was reconstructed in 1976. This reconstruction ensures that Sukjeongmun continues to stand as a testament to its historical and cultural significance. Following the Blue House Raid of 1968, security measures tightened around the gate. For years, access was restricted. However, since 2007, Sukjeongmun has once again opened its doors to the public. Today, as you stand before Sukjeongmun, take a moment to appreciate its unique history. It’s a quiet sentinel, a silent witness to centuries of Seoul’s story. Its history, steeped in tradition and symbolism, offers a glimpse into a royal past, a world away from the modern bustle of Seoul.
