Ever wondered how a mountain could get its name from a phoenix? Here at Bongjesan that’s exactly what happened. Legend says people thought the mountain looked like a phoenix about to take flight. They saw the mythical bird picking at grains and seeds. So they called it Bongjesan. Bongjesan means Phoenix Mountain.

Originally this area had another name. It was called Baekseok Park. This came from the white stones found near Deungchon Elementary School and Baekseok Middle School. In 2004 the park’s name changed to Bongjesan. It was done to better reflect the mountain’s identity.

Bongjesan is not a very tall mountain. It stands only 117 meters high. However it offers trails and lush forests. These make it a great place for locals. It is a perfect spot for a refreshing escape.

You can find several facilities here. There is Beopseongsa Temple. You can also find Yongmunsasage and Baedeuminteo. A pharmacy is available if needed.
