Bongguksa Temple’s Daegwangmyeongjeon Hall. A place of peace and vibrant history. We stand before a structure that has witnessed centuries of devotion. Bongguksa Temple, originally built in 1028, has been rebuilt and renamed throughout its existence. The current Daegwangmyeongjeon Hall we see at Bongguksa Temple dates back to 1674. It was then that King Hyeonjong ordered its reconstruction and renaming. It served as a place of worship for two princes, Myeonghae and Myeongseon. Their devotion helped restore the temple’s prestige. It became an important place for royal Buddhist practices.

Bongguksa Temple’s Daegwangmyeongjeon Hall has a unique structure. The main hall is a 3×3 bay structure. The side bays are 3 bays each. Imagine the vibrant colors and intricate details that once adorned this hall. The roofline sweeps upwards, culminating in ornate decorations. This reflects traditional Korean temple architecture.

Now, picture yourself stepping inside. The hall’s interior is dominated by a large statue of Buddha. This is the main Buddha of Daegwangmyeongjeon. Originally, the main Buddha was Vairocana. However, it was Sakyamuni Buddha that occupied Nahanjeon Hall. Now, the current Buddha statue is thought to be a Wooden Amitabha Buddha. This statue is believed to have been moved here in 1939. This was when Bongguksa Temple was relocated to its current location in Seongnam.

The statue sits upon a raised platform. It exudes serenity and wisdom. The air is thick with the scent of incense. Monks chant softly, their voices echoing through the hall. The walls are covered in murals. These murals depict scenes from the Buddha’s life and teachings.

Bongguksa Temple also played a role in Korea’s fight for independence. It served as a base for the Korean Independence Corps during the Japanese colonial era. This corps was formed by Kim Kyo-sang. Bongguksa Temple’s involvement shows its importance not just as a religious site. It was also a place of community and resistance. Look closely at the architecture. You can see traces of its history embedded in its very stones. The Daegwangmyeongjeon Hall, the main hall, is a 3-kan (bay) wide and 3-kan deep structure. The side bays are each 3-kan wide. This unique design speaks to the artistry and craftsmanship of the Joseon era. It is a tangible reminder of Bongguksa Temple’s enduring legacy. A testament to its importance in Korean history and culture.
