From 1958 to 1985 the area housed the Korea Air Force Academy. This academy was eventually relocated to Cheongju. The Seoul Metropolitan Government then acquired the land. They transformed the former academy site into the park we see today. The park opened on May 5 1986. It’s named Boramae meaning baby hawk after a symbol used by the academy.
Boramae Park covers a vast area of 413352 square meters. It features numerous facilities. These include playgrounds tennis courts and even a soccer field. There are badminton courts a jogging track and a gateball court. A rock climbing wall also stands tall. Families can enjoy picnic areas and a floor fountain. The park boasts community centers and a small zoo. A dog park was added in 2016. A new children’s park opened in 2024. A pond adds to the serene atmosphere.
A unique aspect of Boramae Park is its Air Park. This area showcases eight airplanes. These are a tribute to the park’s past as the Korea Air Force Academy. A significant monument Seongmudae stands proudly. Built in 1962 it’s a testament to the contributions of former cadets. Donations from these cadets funded its construction.
