Stepping into the realm of faith, we find ourselves before Bethel Church, or in Korean, 베델교회. This church, nestled in Seoul’s Mokdong district, has a fascinating history. It all began in 1988 with a small group of only seven individuals. Pastor Kim Sang-Bok, originally intending to study theology in the US, felt a calling to establish a church in Korea. He envisioned a church rooted in gospel values, relevant to contemporary society, and always looking towards the future. This vision became the cornerstone of Bethel Church. Initially, the church, then known as Youngnak Church, held services in a modest 4-pyeong (approximately 132 sq ft) space within a 2-story commercial building in Mokdong. The year 1988 was a pivotal time for South Korea, with social unrest and a growing need for spiritual guidance. Bethel Church offered solace and direction amidst these challenging times. Within a year, the congregation grew significantly, necessitating a move to a larger space. By 1992, Bethel Church boasted a membership of 200, including 220 students, highlighting its focus on education and spiritual growth. Today, Bethel Church stands as a testament to the power of faith and vision. It has evolved from a small gathering to a vibrant community of over 10,000 members. This growth reflects not just the dedication of its founders and members but also the church’s ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic urban landscape.
