Ever wonder where love resides? It lives right here at Bethany Church. This church stands as a beacon of faith in Seoul. Let’s explore its history.

Bethany Church is part of the Korean Methodist Church. It is located in Guro-gu Seoul. The church’s story began humbly.

In January 1964 services started in a private home. This home was in Guro-dong Yeongdeungpo-gu. Reverend Jeon Tae-mok led these early worships.

Ten years later in 1974 the church had grown. Membership exceeded 1000 people. By 1976 Bethany Church began offering three services. These took place at 7 AM 9 AM and 11 AM.

Bethany Church continued to expand. In 1980 it helped establish another church. This was the Gangseo Central Church. By 1982 Bethany Church had 2000 members. They celebrated with a service for the construction of their third sanctuary.

In October 1990 Reverend Damim was inaugurated. He became the Chairman of the Methodist Council. In 2000 Reverend Gyeongju Hwan became the second Damim pastor. In December 2000 the church bought new land. This was for a new sanctuary in Guro-gu. In October 2001 they moved to this new sanctuary.

In September 2004 the church changed its name. Guro Central Church became Bethany Church. They also opened the Saengmyeong Sarang Welfare Center. In January 2005 the name Bethany Church was officially declared. In December 2005 the term ‘district’ changed to ‘parish’. The parish’s name became ‘A Place of the Holy Spirit’s Love Fellowship and Peace’.

Bethany Church is deeply involved in social work. They aim to share love and build community. The church has a social work department. This department includes five teams. Each team focuses on different services.

One team visits elderly people providing meals. Another helps disabled people with home care. They also support children. A team of seniors focuses on serving the church. Another team supports families in need. They provide financial aid and home visits. The final team assists disabled seniors. They help them attend church services and meals.

Currently Reverend Damim Gyeongju Hwan leads the church. He is supported by seven assistant pastors. There are also nine missionary pastors and nine education pastors. The church has around 3500 registered members. Bethany Church also operates the Shinyong Cooperative and Sehwa Children’s Home.

Bethany Church’s journey reflects faith community and service. It continues to be a house of love. Remember Bethany means House of Love. It is a fitting name for this vibrant Seoul church.
