“Where does Seoul’s subway Line 5 go to sleep at night?” The answer lies before us at Banghwa Train Depot. This is the western terminus of the line. It is more than just a place to park trains. It is a vital hub for maintenance and management.

Banghwa Train Depot is in Gangseo-gu. Specifically, it is located in Banghwa-dong. The depot’s primary function is to oversee the maintenance of the Seoul Metro’s 5000 series trains. These trains operate on Line 5. Think of Banghwa Train Depot as a giant garage. Here, trains undergo rigorous inspections. Necessary repairs are also carried out.

The depot connects directly to Banghwa Station. This station is the terminal stop on Line 5. A connecting line allows trains to enter and exit the depot. Trains that finish their runs at Banghwa Station use this line. They then proceed into the depot for overnight storage and maintenance.

When a 5000 series train arrives at Banghwa Station, it can enter the depot. It uses the connecting line. When a train needs to start its service, it exits the depot. It then enters Banghwa Station to begin its route. Exit operations occur at Hwagok Station during morning hours. They operate from Banghwa Station on weekdays and from both stations on holidays. Entry operations are only from Banghwa Station on weekdays. Both Banghwa and Hwagok Stations are used on holidays.

Each train has a designated number. Regular entry and exit train numbers are in the 1500 range. Temporary entry and exit train numbers are in the 1150 range. Interestingly, there is no separate subway station within the Banghwa Train Depot itself.

In June 2018, an accident occurred involving train 529. This train was stabled at the depot overnight. A fire broke out due to aged parts. The fire damaged car 5029. This made it unusable. Train 529 was coupled with car 5018 during operation. Seoul Metro attempted to conceal minor fires that also occurred. This led to controversy. Today, Banghwa Train Depot stands as a testament to Seoul’s commitment. It ensures safe and efficient subway operations.
