Amidst the bustling cityscape, a bronze figure stands tall, a silent guardian of childhood dreams. This is the 방정환 Statue, a tribute to a man who championed the rights and joys of children in a time when their voices were often unheard. 방정환, born in 1899, dedicated his life to ensuring that every child in Korea had the opportunity to learn, play, and grow into a hopeful adult. He recognized the innocence and potential of children, especially during the difficult period of Japanese colonial rule. He saw children as the future of an independent and strong Korea. 방정환 tirelessly advocated for children’s rights, establishing the first Children’s Day in Korea on May 1, 1923. This celebration was a groundbreaking event, predating the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child by decades. He believed that nurturing a child’s spirit and providing access to education and cultural experiences were essential for building a brighter future. 방정환 also made significant contributions to children’s literature. He founded the first pure children’s magazine, “Eorini,” filling its pages with enchanting fairy tales, educational games, and stories that instilled a sense of Korean identity. He understood the power of storytelling and used it to inspire and empower young minds. He even used a variety of pen names to create a sense of mystery and fun for his young readers. Sadly, his passionate work took a toll on his health. His love for sweets, especially “bingsu,” a shaved ice dessert, and his heavy workload contributed to his untimely death at the young age of 32. The 방정환 Statue stands not just as a memorial to a remarkable individual, but also as a symbol of the ongoing fight for children’s rights and well-being. It reminds us of the importance of nurturing and protecting the next generation, ensuring that they have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams and build a better world.
